Several well-known and often drastic diets actually date back quite a long time. Below, we’ll take a look at some of them.
Cigarette Diet
Today, even young children know about the dangers of tobacco products. However, in the 1920s and 1930s, this issue was rarely discussed, and nearly everyone smoked.
Tobacco companies wanted to boost their profits even further, so they came up with the so-called "Cigarette Diet." Smoking has been proven to suppress appetite, leading to weight loss.
However, there is one small downside - it destroys internal organs far more quickly and efficiently than a little extra fat ever could. That’s why this diet should not even be considered.
Tapeworm Diet
At the beginning of the 20th century, weight loss through tapeworms spread rapidly in the United States. Not even the repulsive appearance of this parasite could deter obese individuals from this drastic method.
Tapeworms settle in the digestive tract, where they steal nutrients from their host. While this does lead to weight loss, the downside is that the host does not receive essential vitamins and other nutrients, which quickly results in deteriorating health due to malnutrition.
Winegard Diet
Vinegar is a popular seasoning, but it should not be consumed in excess. However, the famous Lord Byron, who was obsessed with his appearance, seemingly never heard this advice.
Instead of exercising regularly, he preferred to follow extreme diets. For example, Byron consumed several tablespoons of vinegar before every meal to suppress his appetite.
The problem is that vinegar, in large quantities, is not exactly healthy - especially not in the long term. It irritates the digestive tract and causes diarrhea and vomiting. That’s why vinegar-based weight loss works so well.
Sleep
Yes, sleep can also act as a calorie burner. As long as a person isn’t sleepwalking and raiding the fridge in the process, they usually lose weight - or at least don't gain any - while sleeping.
The problem is that we can't sleep all day. Even if we didn’t have to go to work, our bodies simply wouldn’t allow us to just drift off indefinitely.
However, many dieters found a simple way around this - sleeping pills. However, users of this sleep diet often became addicted to sleeping pills, which certainly did not benefit their health or well-being.
This highly unhealthy and ineffective dieting method emerged alongside the first hypnotic medications.
